PROTECTION OF COINAGE
AN ORDINANCE TO PROHIBIT THE MELTING DOWS OF GOLD AND SILVER COIN.

Short title.

1. This Ordinance may be cited as the Ceylon Coinage Ordinance.

Duration.

2. This Ordiance shall comtinue in force until such time as the Governor-General shall terminate it by Proclamation in the Gazette.

Penalty for melting and breaking up gold or silver coins.

(1) Any person who shall melt, break up, or use otherwise than as currency any gold or silver coin which is legal tender in Ceylon shall be guilty of an offence, and liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding one thousand rupees, or to imprisionment of either description for a period not exceeding two years, or to both and to the forfeiture of the coin in respect of which the offence was commited or of any metal or other article dervie thereform, together with any other metal or article with which the material of such coin may be intermingled.


(2) Any person who knowingly uses, posesses, or deals with any metal or article which he knows or has reasonable cause to believe to be delivered from any coin or to be the product in whole or in part of any coin which has been dealt with in contravention of this Ordinance shall be guilty of an offence, and liable to the same penalties and forfeiture as those prescribe by the last preceding subsection.

(3) This section shall not apply to any coins in actual use as personal ornaments at the date of the passing of this Ordinance.
